Memory Resources for DNP, ES and DS

I am currently evaluating DNPanel for use in a VPS system for a select client base that I do dev work for. I like the application but am concerned about the memory usage of the applications. It seems that as I  use DNP the memory usage grows significantly even though I only have 2 customers (4 domains total) installed.

If I manually recycle the IIS6 Application Pools the apps sit at about 8.5MB Real and 6.5 Virtual. With very little effor (navigating , check a few things and add stuff) the memory then just easily to 50 -90 MB per app for both Real and Virtual memory.

The problem is that this is on a VPS with 1GB of memory and based on a previous thread I created. I can get System out of memory when attempting application package installs.

So my question is are there ways to reduce this memory usage or keep it under control.

    thanks

I've been meaning to ask about the amount of memory DNP uses, see below Portal seems to be using a lot

It is normal to have 50 - 90MB per application (Portal, ES or Server) and 1GB on VPS is more than enough. I'm just wondering about memory quota per app your are consider reasonable? Smile

Yes sometimes it becomes hungry of memory. Smile In the future versions we'll concentrate on memory usage efficiency.

As an option I would recommend you to enable Web Portal App Pool recycling.

Can you recommend after what amount of memory usage we should do this?

Couldn't say right now. We should profile it first.

Yeah that would be great to know what Application Pool settings would be good. I am assuming it depends on services and number of customers being served.

Should a memory threshold be used also? I will be experimenting with Pool settings to see what happens, since I am the developer and this is more of a psuedo managed environment I amy be able to be more agressive in Pool settings than most.

I will say though memory usage is a factor big factor  when you are looking at a VPS. my VPS has the following other major services running on it.

    ColdFusion MX 7 Standard (Jrun)
    MS SQL Server Workgroup
    MySQL
    PHP
    SmartMail, Stats

Thanks for the response on memory usage.

Actually this was one of my reason for uninstalling DNP, plus I felt it needed a bit of maturing before production use. Honestly I'm still wondering about DNP's practical use within a production environment. I mean unless each machine was outfitted with at least a min of Quad processors w/ 8-16GB to accommodate for application pools and/or sql server.

I wanted to delve into this a bit further...

Re: Memory Resources for DNP, ES and DS

Can anyone give us any stats are far as server builds to DNP, ES and DS page views, users, ect? I believe I used in within a 35 domain environment or so, "not all the domains managed by DNP" on a P4 SATA drive/w 4GB, running SQL Server on the same machine. Ok yes I had to do some restructuring add a couple servers and/or upgrade to Quad/ w/8GB SCSI configs for hardware...

I don't mean to imply DNP was not mature enough for production use that's not it. I just felt for the amount of ecommerce sites versus DNP portal's we run on the server the memory consumption of the the application pools w/sql server was just limiting it so we removed DNP. But our ecommerce sites don't use DNP at all. We'd just like to manage HDD/bandwidth ect, so bulk up the machine or add another server right...

I tried running a DNP dev machine P3 500 w/512 MB with a few site as a single machine with everything DNP, ES, DS, SQL, mail, php and smarterstats' and needless to say, it's kind of sufferin.. lol

Got high here, I've seen ES get up around 200mb

The problem with App Pool Recycling on Portal is it logs them out, and if there in the middle of doing something this can be a pain.

Hi comes DNP can't release some of the memory it doesn't need, it's the same with SmarterMail that can get close to 120mb

    Hi there,

Actually 120~200MB memory footprint is ok for ASP.NET application. Sure we'll add in our TO-DO list "minimize memory footprint" task for the future DNP optimization.

Re: Memory Resources for DNP, ES and DS

    Hello!

Is this normal to DNP have usage like this (as far I can see DNPPortal has normal memory usage):

    • DNPServer 444 MB
    • DNPEnterpriseServer 162 MB

This is in testing environment (Windows 2008 Web Server) where is almost no users. What recycling settings do You have for Your DNP installations?

    Thanks
