Hello,
I am wondering about the fact the DNP doesn't have a Migration manager.
I also wonder why it is not implemented until now as DotnetPanel is already in market for 3 years now give and take.
A proper migration tool that enables easy migration ability from server to server mainly. I also do not see a proper backup and restore method for DNP enterprise server without manually messing with database etc.
As I think about it servers are not Immortal and we cannot assume that they will run for ever.
An easy way to handle backups, restores and migration in urgency should exist. It is not that I do not know how to backup my data and restore it when needed. There are several ways to do that, like buy Acronis trueimage ($600) which can do disk imaging, Backing up everything to a mounted network drive using some kind of disk sync software etc. We can even have a load balancer and mirror data, distribute load while having failover protection etc. In the endand the last pay technicians and get all done. Yes things can be done but at what cost and time?
Who is going to buy my hosting package priced at $10 because of my investment into managing my company. The same package I am selling for $10 is being sold by my competetor at $3. While I might boast that our hosting is rock solid and our servers are powerful etc. I am still doing less business when it comes to volume and revenues. Please do not tell me that there are Customers who want quality and there are those who want it cheap. However we look at it more and more customers lean to less costly solutions with same features.
We cannot change the market and I agree choice plys big role and every one has their share of the pie, but I look at it likecost control is important to succeed in business.
DNP is feature rich with a slick interface and usability but it lacks way behind when it comes to migration, emergency and disaster management. Everything is pain when something goes wrong and we need specialist help to get over this.
My take is that DNP should provide us easier options. It's like DIY you know, there are plumbers and there are guys who go to Home Depot buy needed tools and materials and do everything themselves. There is a choice you know. But where is choice here with DNP. Where are the tools that are easy to use with little documentation.
Another thing is there is no bug tracker, we are blind folded about what is going on with DNP development, yes as a user it would be nice if I know what is coming up in next release, It helps me plan ahead.
When you take a look at Helm, Plesk and Hosting controller they all have some kind of migration tools. They do work. Why not DNP? isn't it fact that as a host you should try to maintain 99.9% uptime... how can we if we use a control panel that doesn't provide us with needed tools. To me it is not only that we make something good but it is also that it should be dependable and help us get over tough times. Tough times here are server failures, moving servers etc.
I hope someone from DNP take this post as constructive criticism and do the best for the good of DNP. I still am a loyal DNP user with multiple licenses. I just want the stuff I use for my business is too good for the takers, not pain.
Regards,
Krish.
