This thread will be to talk about how DNP currently handles Subdomains. I would like to get as much feedback as possible. I have been talking to Andrey at DNP for a little while about this and I have a proposal for a change on how DNP currently handles the limits of Subdomains.
Currently DNP has Domains, Websites, and Subdomains.
If an admin wanted to offer their customer Unlimited Domains, 1 Website, and Unlimited Subdomains they could but it's not very useful. Subdomains normally have their own website or sub site you might call it of the main website. For example, you might have your main website and a domain pointed to it yourdomain.com and then you might have a billing site (billing.yourdomain.com)
DNP's subdomains can either point to an existing website which you could have Website1 and have domain.com sub1.domain.com sub2.domain.com sub3.domain.com all point to Website1 but in the real world who does that? There might be some occasions you would but I believe 99% of the time the subdomain will point to a different site.
Those that have come from HELM will understand this more. If you really want unlimited subdomains your only option is to have unlimited websites as well which is not good if your trying to limit the customer to 1 main website with unlimited domain pointers (domain aliases) and unlimited subdomains.
My first thought was that subdomain websites do not count against the website limit but Andrey brought up a good point a user could abuse this and have 100's of subdomain sites which I can understand not wanting that to happen.
My suggestion is maybe add a SubDomain Website limit and make Domains so they can only point to websites and subdomains can only point to subdomain websites. Then your plan could look something like this.
Unlimited Domains (Domain Aliases)
1 Website (only domains can point to this)
Unlimited SubDomains
Unlimited SubDomain Websites (only SubDomains can point to this)
Then a customer could have a domain called mydomain1.com and several subdomains and several domain aliases and only 1 website for the domain and aliases and several subdomain websites for the subdomains.
Example:
Website1
mydomain1.com (points to) Website1
mydomain2.com (points to) Website1 (this is a Domain Alias)
SubWebsite1
SubWebsite2
sub1.mydomain1.com (points to) SubWebsite1
sub2.mydomain1.com (points to) SubWebsite2
Since mydomain2.com is an alias of mydomain1.com sub1.mydomain2.com should also point to SubWebsite1 and sub2.mydomain2.com should point to SubWebsite2 and this should not be changeable because mydomain2.com is an alias of mydomain1.com
In my opinion right now the SubDomain limit in DNP is useless for any real word use and I believe it should be reworked either as I have described above or some other way.
Again Andrey and Myself are looking for everyones feedback on this.
