    Hi azfar,

You will probably need to have an SPLA via your data center or direct with MS to run Windows Server 2003 as a hosting platform. DNP will run just fine on Standard or Enterprise but with Enterprise you have the ability to install four instances of the OS on the server with MS virutalization software - if you can get it for the right price take Enterprise.

You can't just get a Windows license in 1-2-3 for webhosting. Basically you need to become a Microsoft partner first and then get a SPLA contract with a company like HP or SoftwareSpectrum. Then you will receive a bunch of Volume License Keys for Web edition, Standard, Enterprise, etc.

All this is basically free. So you can install you servers with the keys you get when you sign the contract. Then you will send them a monthly report of how many licenses you have in use and based on that report you will receive the bill. The costs depend of the kind of licenses you will use (web, standard, enterprise,...) and the amount of CPUs you have in your servers.

Choosing between different versions mainly depends on your hardware (Web edition only supports max 2 CPUs and 2GB RAM), and the kind of additional software you will run (SQL server doesn't run on Web edition for instance)

If you need more specific info, pls let us know.

    Azfar,

Take a look at this post: http://forum.dotnetpanel.com/forums/thread/2862.aspx

It sheds more light on choosing between Windows editions.

    Re: Windows 2003 License ?

Azfar, remember that the Web Edition wont allow you to run MS DNS, MS SQL, MS Exchange and other products from Microsoft as its intended to provide services for the webserver IIS only - thats why its called "Web" Edition.

But you can freely use thirdparty software such as MailEnable, MySQL etc. on a Web Edition.

Small Business Server comes with ISA, Exchange and other products that are for small companies and should not be mixed with the requirements for DNP.

My advice for you is: Standard Edition (Enterprise would be too risky and expensive)

Get a SPLA and just use a default installation of MS Standard Server 2003. Follow the guideliness from DNP if there are any (I havent installed DNP yet so I dont know if any specific DNP-docs are available for the installation of the OS).

But also take a close look at the link Feodor mentions above.

For the record, Web Edition does come with MS DNS. I am running MS DNS on Web edition, as it doesn't require much resources and Web edition is the perfect fit for this.

MS SQL 2005 Express edition (or the former MSDE) can be run on Web edition. SQL Workgroup and Standard require at least Standard edition, although they can also be run on Win 2000 Pro and XP Pro. SQL Enterprise needs Standard Edition or higher.

    Re: Windows 2003 License ?

Ingvald, thank you for a more accurate answer.

In short, you wont be allowed the "big" MS solutions on the Web edition, so you can easily install SQL Express but I did not know MS DNS was allowed - good we sorted that out Wink
