Anyone have DNP 2.8.x working with Windows 2008 x64?

    Hi All,

I assume the answer is yes but i'm not experiencing much success with Windows 2008 x64. I can install DNP but when it comes to trying to add/remove ASP.NET 2 it's a none starter, there are no errors but neither are the extensions removed. ASP/Perl/PHP is just fine, just ASP.NET 2. I have a support ticket open but seem to be getting nowhere fast.

Would anyone be willing to advise if they do anything "special" to get it working? - I have followed the install guide precisely numerous times with the same results. This leads me to wonder if I have something missing from the database as the DNP Enterprise Server remains the same, the W2K8 box is an addition to the environment.

Would anyone be willing to give me a dump of some of their database tables as I suspect that is where the answer sits? I don't want anything 'sensitive' just data from one or two config server config tables - passwords/IPs can be removed.

    Thanks,

    Nathan.

From what I know this is a known bug DNP on Windows 2008 x64 doesnt detects ASP.net extentions paths.

    Hi Rubal,

There is definately an issue of sorts, I may have resolved it by adding additional "default" entries to one of the Service tables. When I add a W2K8 x64 box it now displays the correct path (presumably from my default values) but it still doesn't function (eg. cannot add the ASP.NET extensions) so my fix of adding default entries may only be half the solution.

    Regards,

IMO, I would reimage the server and reinstall DNP.

I am running 2008 R2 x64 with 2.8.11 and although I have the ASP.net stuff "not detected" I don't have any problems.  You might want to open a support ticket for your server problems if you can't reinstall/reimage this server.

Thanks for the suggestion but I already have a support ticket open (8 days now) and have tried rebuilding the W2K8 box numerous times. The only 'static' element is the DNP Enterprise server/Portal Server which makes me wonder whether something is set incorrectly in the DNP database.

Do you need to keep this database or can you dump it?  Sounds like you have it pinpointed.

I dumped the database and recreated. The ASP.NET extension addition/removal worked to a degree - I could add/remove the extensions which I did several times after which DNP seemed become out of sync with IIS. After it went out of sync it failed to work again. It's as if DNP expects you to ASP.NET 2 then remove then switch to ASP.NET 2 integrated rather than say a simple switch from .NET 2 to .NET 2 integrated.

I have subsequently added other test sites but they seem to fail to add (or remove) the extensions. It's as if something is change by DNP within the database which then breaks the management of ASP.NET 2.0

It's all very strange and perhaps more so disappointing how flakey the product is, certainly from my experience with W2K8/IIS 7. Let's hope my support ticket yields something but I'm not holding my breath for a quick resolution... Hmm...

I know what you mean by the .net 2 and .net 2 integrated.  I have asked our web guys to take some time and check into this.  I think that DNP defaults to the 'best' or most current method which is a little annoying in this area.  Like yourself the older websites that we are migrating all have to be switched after the initial setup in DNP.

This is really odd.  I have other websites setup in IIS as well.  You're not going in and deleting the DNP application pools manually or changing items with the websites that DNP setup, are you?  Perhaps IIS is the problem?  Can you uninstall and re-setup IIS?  ...or maybe there is a custom IIS service/function/etc that you installed that is messing with DNP?

The setup is vanilla, no custom addons at all. For the latest test I configured a W2K8 x64 VM, then installed IIS7.0, php, etc as per the DNP documents. I then installed DNP in a 'standalone' configuration to ensure that no legacy configuration was causing issues. The only thing I did after installing W2K8 was to install the latest service pack/patches. I have not manually tweaked the pools, etc as I wanted to make the testing as fair as possible. So all configuration was completed by DNP, I just manually verified the changes DNP made by checking the IIS 7.0 MMC.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts... Guess I have some more investigations to do!

The VM might be the problem...  check out some of the other posts.  I saw someone who was having problems with the VM if they had DNP setup on the same box as the VM DNP.  Good luck!  Sounds like you're going to have to submit a DNP ticket.  I'm very interested to hear what you found to be the problem.

I already have a ticket open, DNP have now acknowledged today it is a bug and they're working on a fix. That's all the information they provided so they may fix it today or it could be weeks/months away... Let's hope it's sooner rather than later.

Also, as DNP have acknowledged it as a bug it suggests it is not VM related.
