CPanel updating MSDNS on server with DNP

    Hi,

Excuse me if I'm being totally stupid but maybe someone can answer this one

I have a windows server (Running DNP) with MSDNS on I have two name servers assigned to that server ns1 and ns2

I also have a Linux box with cPanel and at the moment DNP creates zones on MSDNS fine, but is it also possible to get cPanel to create zones on my ns1 on the windows box

I basically want to have ns1 on my windows box and ns2 on the Linux box which is on another network for redundancy but I also want when sites are  created in cpanel that the zones for the domain are created on the primary name server (ns1) on the windows box. Is there a way to allow cpanel to update zones on my windows server which then get replicated to ns2 on the linux server or can I do it some other way?

Sorry im a bit new at this DNS stuff.

I'm not sure if you can work with Windows-based DNS from cPanel, but I may be wrong.

I not sure but what I thought is could do is have ns1 on MSDNS and ns2 on the Linux DNS server, make ns2 authoritative for domains on Linux with ns1 as secondary with ns1 authoritative for domains on Windows with ns2 secondary. Wouldn't the domains created on each DNS server be replicated to the other DNS server automatically?

Also if I do it this way (if possible) would users on the Linux DNS have to enter there DNS entries for domains in reverse i.e

ns2 then ns1 (rather than ns1 then ns2) or wouldn't it matter what order they entered the DNS for there domains. (I would rather have them able to enter ns1 then ns2 for obvious anti-confusion reasons.)

Yes, they will be replicated provided you have a corresponding secondary zone on the destination server. Definitely, secondary DNS would not pull all zones from the primary DNS, but only specified ones.

It is possible to have cPanel as a slave DNS, it's also possible to have MSDNS as a slave to the cPanel DNS, what I've not yet had the time for is to build some form of automation script to make the cPanel system call an API on the Windows box to add the secondary zone file or to get the DNP system to call a cPanel API to add the zone to cPanel's DNS. Manually creating the secondary zones works OK though.

For DNP you can use its SOAP web services.

DNP will allow this even if there's not a matching account for the domain hosted on the box ?

With a bit of your help I got the linux based billing system to create DNP accounts, so it shouldn't be too difficult to make a differnt API call.

Something else to add to my To-Do list Smile

Re: CPanel updating MSDNS on server with DNP

What I wanted was a way of updating both DNS's by only updating one, I was under the impression that this would be normal way master/slave DNS's work. i;ve now however found out that this is not the case (mostly) and you actually have to add the zone to each DNS server directly. Obviously this means some sort of automation (If both MSDNS and on separate servers then two DNP licences).

However simpleDNS does do proper slave DNS where a slave server will update its list of zones from the master simpleDNS server, shame it costs so much. However this still does not solve the issue of having DNS on different platforms.

Maybe the DNP team could write an add-on to allow communication to some other Linux based DNS services to allow this kind of thing, maybe even make it synchronise between the two so that each can be updated with each others zones when ever a zone is created in either of the DNS servers.

Well, I think we'll solve this problem in the near future by a) introducing clustering and b) supporting services running on Linux platform.

How? Can you supply some documentation? I've looked everywhere and cant find any information about the soap web services.

I'm trying to automate account creation from my home made billing system, I looked into the EasyAPI component but it doesn't seem to offer a way to apply a hosting plan to a user, just allows creation of accounts and the writers dont respond to my emails.

Take a look at this thread that I started when creating a DNP module for Whois.Cart(), it should give you all you need to get started.
