    Network setup?

Do you use LAN IPs in your DNP network setup, or do all your servers have dedicated WAN IPs?

What do you use and why?

What does DNP recommend? Any comments from the DNP crew?

    Re: Network setup?

If you have both Internal and Extertnal Networks running on your server then I'll suggest setting up Control Panel and all other internal Server communication to use internal IP if possible for security reasons.

Say if you have a firewall you can keep everything open on internal IPs and can block the ports for External ones ..

I am sure DNP or any good sysadmin will suggest the same ...

    Thanks

    Re: Network setup?

I use all internal IPs, as Rubal said best "for security reasons" mostly.  It also simplifies my life when troubleshooting servers.  I also try to stay away from  using localhost (127.0.0.1)  when I can avoid it.

What do you use or recommend for routing external IPs to internal IPs?

    Re: Network setup?

Are you looking to co-locate your own servers, If so you would need some routers and switches and someone to configure them for you.  Make sure to do it right from the start or else trying to re-configure everything after you go live is not a easy process.

I would suggest to keep it simple, start with a dedicated server provider that can give you public and local networks.

We provide these types of dedicated server networks with private vlans and secure local networks with DNP.

    Re: Network setup?

You can use hardware or software based solutions to route and / or filter your traffic.

Hardware based is a router or a firewall - software based is anything from basic MS routing to ISA or similar servers.

Very basic solution - if you are running a MS 2003 server that has dual network cards is to turn on routing and create a forwarder to NAT rules to forward your traffic.

Also, to confirm what everyone else recommended, keep all your servers with internal IP's and forward traffic to them via a hardware or software solution.

    Hope this helps / Joe
